European Portuguese has a genuinely rich vowel system. Alongside the standard oral vowels, a, e, i, o and u, it adds nasal vowels like ão, õe and ãe, plus a range of diphthongs and vowel reduction patterns. For Dutch, French or English speakers, this is a completely new kind of pronunciation practice. Children need to use the nasal cavity and mouth resonance together, which demands more precise muscle control and listening coordination than languages built only on oral vowels.
Early exposure to such a varied sound system genuinely helps a child’s phonological awareness, the sensitivity to the individual sounds that make up a language, which in turn supports learning other languages later. Brazilian music, with its lively, complex rhythms, gives children a natural way to feel that rhythm through their whole body, clapping, stomping, dancing along as they learn.
Portuguese has a longer history in Belgium than most people realise. The first Portuguese trading post moved to Antwerp in 1499, and Portuguese merchants and their descendants have been part of the city’s story ever since. Today, Belgium is home to around 100,000 Portuguese-Belgians and Portuguese residents, with a well-established community in Brussels that goes back generations.
Our Portuguese programme for children covers ages 6 to 10 and 11 to 16, with live online lessons delivered by certified native speakers and structured around CEFR levels A1.1 through B2.3.
