Kurdish is a core communication skill at major international humanitarian organisations. The International Committee of the Red Cross explicitly recruits Kurdish translators, asking for C1 level English and Kurdish, with placements in Iraq and deployment possible worldwide on renewable 12-month contracts. The International Organization for Migration also hires translators specifically for Kurmanji.
Inside Belgium, the Flanders Red Cross needs Kurmanji-speaking interpreter volunteers for family reunification work. If you want to work at an international humanitarian body like the ICRC, IOM or Red Cross, or support Kurdish community and human rights work here in Belgium, Kurdish is one the language skills that open that door.
Kurdish belongs to the same Indo-European language family as the languages spoken in Belgium. Some Kurdish dialects, including Kurmanji, even use masculine and feminine noun genders similar to French. Unlike Arabic or Hebrew, which come from the Semitic family and feel structurally unfamiliar to most Europeans, Kurdish follows a subject-object-verb pattern that tends to click faster for European learners.
Learning the Sorani dialect, written in Arabic-Persian script, gives you a genuine head start on reading Arabic script and understanding Persian vocabulary, since both sit in the same Iranian language branch.
